Dr. John M. Blair House circa 1900 505 S. Hayne St."In 1900 W.H. Phifer sold a house and lot on Hayne Street to physician John M. Blair, a native of Chesterfield County, SC, who quickly built this two-story Classical Revival frame house on the site, as it appears in Stack and Beasley in 1902. His unusual house features a side-hall-plan main block topped by a high hipped slate roof with acroteria and has two-story gabled bays on the side elevations, a one-story gable-roofed wing on the north elevation, and a one-story wing-and-ell configuration across the rear. The two-bay facade features small pedimented dormers, semi-hexagonal bays on the second floor, and a semi-hexagonal bay on the right first-floor bay. The latter bay has a stained glass transom above a single-light window flanked by one over one windows. A similar transomed window is located to the left of the entrance in the left (north) bay. Tuscan columns support the one-story wraparound porch which is rounded at the northwest corner; at the entrance bay, four heavier Tuscan columns rise directly from the front walk for a projecting portico. Four tall brick chimneys with corbelled caps rise in interior and exterior end locations." - National Register
"Dr. John M. Blair was born in [Jefferson] Chesterfield County, S.C., April 3rd, 1864. He was educated at the South Carolina Military Academy, at Charleston, and the Greenville (S.C) Military Institute. He read medicine at Charleston and graduated at the medical college in Louisville. He first located at Dudley, S.C., and after practicing there one year, located in Monroe. He is now county physician, local surgeon of the S.A.L. Railway, and enjoys a good practice. As a surgeon he stands high. He is now serving his third term as alderman, having been elected in 1901 as alderman at large for the city. Dr. Blair is an attractive conversationalist, a most companionable gentleman and an all-round, jam-up, good fellow." - Stack & Beasley 1902
John Miller Blair (1864-1930) was the son of Isaac Hilton Blair and Louisa Matida Miller. In 1892, J.M. first married Metalah Whitfield (1864-1896) of Union County; they had one son, Harry Hilton Blair, born in 1894. In 1900, J.E. married Hannah Jane Saunders (1865-1945), born in Sumter, S.C., daughter of Dr. Swepson Harrison Saunders and Harriet Rebecca McCall. J.E. and Hannah had one daughter, Hannah Jane Blair (1902-1999).
